Pallet Racking Collapses: What to Consider

In most cases, pallet racking collapses are preventable and usually occur because of several factors including poor practice, inappropriate training, product quality or non-maintenance. Understanding the risks involved will change any future outcomes.

Appreciating the associated risks with a racking collapse and what causes a racking system to collapse is key, as they pose a number of hazards to business and employees:

• Business downtime

• Stock loss

• Loss of business

• Potential fines/safety investigations

• Injury or death

Business downtime – Time will be needed to clear any debris and begin operations again. Depending on the situation HSE may be involved and launch an investigation into the reasons for the collapse which could result in greater operational downtime.

Stock loss – Stock if not totally ruined because of racking collapse will potentially be damaged.

Loss of business – Possibility of not completing customers’ orders, the potential to lose contracts and impact on brand reputation.

Potential fines and safety investigations – HSE or PUWER (Provision of Work Equipment Regulations) prosecution.

Injury or death – Anything from slight or severe injury, pallet racking collapses can and does result in death.

Steps To Prevent Racking Collapse

Maintenance:

• Routine visual inspections to check for damage or faults.

• Immediately report damage don’t wait.

• Undertake an annual inspection by an approved SEMA racking inspector.

• Maintain racking to manufacturers guidelines.

Collisions:

• Is there enough space between racks for MHE being used?

• What protection and safety measures are in place?

• Are speed limits being observed?

• Have MHE operators had the correct training?

• Is lighting adequate?

• Are there any aisle obstructions?

Overloading:

• Make all MHE operators aware of weight limits.

• Ensure weight limits are being observed.

• Use the correct racking for the type of stock being stored.

• Store the heaviest loads on lower racks.

Layout and design have direct impact on the success of any pallet racking system. Avoid at all costs allowing stock to obstruct the middle of an aisle as this is a potential ‘knock’ hazard. And as operations increase ensure any additions or retrofits have had careful racking safety consideration.
